About the Hub's Rising Stars project....

Getting noticed in a forest of aspiring artists has never been easy. This is especially true in photography and in today's souring economy. It's often said that talented individuals will always rise to the surface. Unfortunately, that may well be society's convenient excuse for not taking the initiative to seek out and support budding artists. It would be a travesty of creativity to allow a promising artist's voice to fade for lack of attention.

Rising Stars is a non-commercial project to proactively discover today's most promising aspiring photographers, to provide a free public stage for showcasing their unique art and promoting their burgeoning careers.

Enjoy their stories and images. And then lend your personal support to nurture their artistry and promote their young careers. In this small way, we all play an important role in developing the next generation of Visionary Photographers.

"Hub's Rising Stars of Photography" is a non-commercial, educational service of Hubbard Camera LLC.

Corina Marie Howell -- In her own words

"After studying art at UCSB, I began my career as the photo editor for Movieline’s Hollywood Life magazine in Los Angeles where I primarily was a producer of high-end celebrity and fashion shoots. My ultimate goal was to get published myself, so I worked my way into shooting for the magazine and eventually others.

For years I subjugated my instinctual morality to the alluring glamor of Hollywood as a magazine editor for a national lifestyle publication. Being fabulous, however, had its price. Working behind the scenes booking, producing, and shooting celebrity fashion shoots introduced me to an environment of maniacal publicists, verbal abuse, and overuse of Photoshop's "liquify" feature.

After too many long days on set with vitamin-deficient and Blackberry-obsessed women, my priorities changed, and my sense of normalcy became distorted. I eventually realized that I'd been bitchy and hungry for far too long and quit my career. I rehabbed to the Bay, went through detox, and began working out my issues through art.

My work currently takes two directions: I am still constantly in pursuit of beautiful imagery and love fashion photography. But I also pursue fine art photography that reflects my experiences within the commercial world. Much of my fine art work exemplifies the chaos that occurs when the strong moral values we're raised with butt up against the instant-gratification allure of celebrity and commercialism. My fashion images involve an exploration into shape, color, and light. In a world where the media carries so many of our messages, we can only hope to fight back using those same tools: in this light, I like to consider my perspective as a rich and vibrant love/hate relationship with beauty and glamour.

In the future I hope to pursue both a commercial career in fashion and beauty imagery as well as a fine art career in social commentary."

What others say:

"Corina Howell is an enthusiastic, go-getting, friendly, ambitious, hardworking talent. As Photo Editor at Hollywood Life magazine (formerly known as Movieline), she always dealt gracefully with the inevitable drama that happened on celebrity photo shoots, keeping everything on track and skilfully developing great relationships with PR people, photographers, and crew. She also successfully endeavored to photograph for the magazine herself. Check out her stylish shots of stars including Jamie-Lynn Spears, Kristen Bell, and Camilla Belle. I wholeheartedly recommend her for inclusion in Hub’s Rising Stars. She is a winner!"
- Andre Chautard

One of "the top ten grads of the planet."

Justin Bernhaut -- In his own words:

"My goal is to continue making pictures that tell a story - whether their purpose is about personal expression, entertainment or to communicate a message. I’m addicted to the power of image making, and its ability to elicit an emotional response at a glance. Photographers have a truly powerful communication device at their fingertips, and there have never been more opportunities to create and rapidly disseminate ideas to a broad audience....

I discovered photography as a child when I found my father’s Hasselblad. I was mesmerized by the clarity of the waist level finder, and I would wander through the house for hours navigating my way through the ground glass..... I still love that Hasselblad, but I have since learned that photography has almost nothing to do with cameras..."

2008 Rising Stars Jurors

This week we
will begin announcing this year's newest Rising Stars of Photography. We have had the good fortune of enlisting three recognized luminaries in the photo world to serve as jurors for the selection of our 2008 class of Rising Stars. We thank Reid Callanan, Andrew Darlow and David Saffir for the time and expertise they have graciously brought to the process of reviewing all of the applicants. They elected an exceptional group of aspiring photographers to be the recipients of Rising Star recognition.

Please take a moment to meet our distinguished panel of jurors.

Reid Callanan
Director of the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, Santa Fe, NM

©Kevin Brown

Reid was the manager of the Maine Photography Workshop when, in 1990, he decided to strike out on his own to establish a Mecca for photographers -- the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. Today Reid's organization is one of the most respected private photographic workshop institutions in the world. Reid conducts educational programs globally and with a commitment to making a difference in people’s lives through photography. He says:

"Looking back, I can identify the primary keys to our success. First and foremost, our staff and instructors are the best in the workshop business. Then, we combine aesthetically beautiful surroundings with an emotionally compelling environment that incorporates healthy doses of creativity, artistry, technique, and play."

Reid and the Santa Fe Workshops have become an inspirational resource for photographers as well as a year-round educational center. Each season, image-makers of every kind travel to magical Santa Fe to engage their imaginations and rekindle their passion for photography. In the beautiful and serene setting of the Santa Fe campus, the senses are stimulated and creativity flourishes. The Workshops encourage participants to produce work that truly bears their signature, to make images that flow from their hearts and souls as well as their eyes.

Each year, Reid organizes, conducts and participates in photographic portfolio reviews to encourage the careers and artistic growth of today's most promising photographers.

David Saffir
Photographer, Printmaker, Author, Educator, Consultant

©David Saffir

David Saffir is possibly one of the most open and approachable photographers I know. His willingness to help aspiring photographers is inspirational. I have had the pleasure of working alongside David at several seminars, workshops and trade show events over the years, and he never fails to draw and excite an admiring audience.

David's also a little nuts. He once led me down a steep embankment that would have challenged a veteran mountain goat, just to get the right angle for his "stream at sunset" picture in Zion Park. On top of all this, David is an exceptional photographer. In fact, David is truly a Visionary Photographer. Aside from spending time at his craft, he can be found around the country conducting seminars that have become "must attends". Click here to see David's hectic seminar schedule. I am proud to call David a friend and am honored by his support of our Rising Stars.

David Saffir is an internationally-recognized, award-winning portrait, commercial, and fine art photographer and printmaker. He lives near Los Angeles, in Santa Clarita, California. He is past President of the Santa Clarita Valley Professional Photographers Association. He is the author of the book Mastering Digital Color: A Photographer's and Artist's Guide to Controlling Color, published by Thomson.

TODAY: Last Day for Rising Star Application Submission

Today is the last day for submitting applications for consideration into the Rising Stars of Photography program. The reception to Rising Stars has been exceptional. Each applicant's material will be submitted to our panel of judges on December 1st. Hopefully the first Rising Star will be announced late next week or early during the week of December 7th.

Submissions have been received from around the world and have included exceptionally creative and imaginative imagery. This will make the judges' task even more difficult, but the end result should be photographically exciting as well as a benchmark for our next round of Rising Stars.

Thanks to each participant and good luck on your review.
