About the Hub's Rising Stars project....

Getting noticed in a forest of aspiring artists has never been easy. This is especially true in photography and in today's souring economy. It's often said that talented individuals will always rise to the surface. Unfortunately, that may well be society's convenient excuse for not taking the initiative to seek out and support budding artists. It would be a travesty of creativity to allow a promising artist's voice to fade for lack of attention.

Rising Stars is a non-commercial project to proactively discover today's most promising aspiring photographers, to provide a free public stage for showcasing their unique art and promoting their burgeoning careers.

Enjoy their stories and images. And then lend your personal support to nurture their artistry and promote their young careers. In this small way, we all play an important role in developing the next generation of Visionary Photographers.

"Hub's Rising Stars of Photography" is a non-commercial, educational service of Hubbard Camera LLC.

Claire Rosen -- In her own words

Currently, I have multiple exhibitions across the country to which I am devoting time, while continuing to photograph my self-portrait series. I have just completed the layout of my self-portrait book, and am meeting with publishers. In addition, I am moving my work into the fashion editorial genre and looking forward to working with traditional print media.

Over the last several months, I have created a project which will attempt to help a young homeless girl in her dream to become a model, including creating a portfolio book for her, securing interviews with various agencies and press coverage. At the same time, I am teaching classes and have upcoming workshops in the US and in Norway, and am hoping to expand to other places.

Leslie Alsheimer -- In her own words

I became interested in photography at the age of 12, when the Leadership program at Marina Middle School in San Francisco entrusted me with a Pentax K-1000 to document school activities for our year book. I went on to become the Photo Editor of the Annandale High School Year book, and kept active in my first chemical darkroom created in our family laundry room for years. Since then, a darkroom - whether chemical or digital - has always been part of my life.

Today, my photographic imagery is concerned with creating images that parallel and interconnect my work as a social worker and my vision of the human spirit. I am interested in the interpersonal connections that transcend race, class, politics and socio-economics—in moving beyond façade and surface to connect to the personal or metaphorical— giving voice to that which is often overlooked and unrecognized.

Through a forward and positive focus, I have been working on a long term body of work portraying the richness of life that accompanies the enduring human spirit; celebrating life, family, culture, community, and play through the joy, pain and love of everyday living.

Created in partnership with NGO’s and humanitarian relief projects around the world actively engaged in solution-oriented work, Project Forward Focus is a portfolio of images that celebrate what people are doing to create a better world by supporting, promoting and encouraging acts of connection, compassion and contribution—i.e. “works that matter”.

Rising Stars Jurors' comments:

"Classic b/w documentary work in Africa, but also very well done and moving. She brings intense emotion to her work."

"Leslie's work is both moving and technically excellent. In many cases, her pictures tell a story of suffering, but often in the same frame, a glimpse of hope shines through. Her black and white images look outstanding, which shows that she has a great eye for the technical side of making and editing pictures."

Michael Kloth -- In his own words

I bought my first digital SLR camera and first began to use it prior to taking a trip to Hawaii. Although at the time I was just looking for a way to record my journey, in retrospect, I realize I was ready to find a creative outlet. It did not take long for my interest in photography to take off, and it was a short two years later that I was considering earning a degree and establishing a career in photography. I am currently working to complete my Master of Fine Arts degree in photography at the Academy of Art University.

Having advanced to the Master’s candidate portion of my studies, I devote most of my creative energy to developing my thesis project working with humane society cats and dogs. Each year in the United States, six to eight million animals are brought to humane societies and only half of them ever find homes. My mission is to call attention to these numbers with the hope that I can convince people looking for pets to consider adopting a rescue animal first when they are looking to add a pet to their home. I believe that professional photography can make a real difference for these animals and I foresee my work with them continuing long past graduation.

In addition to my work with rescue animals, I am very interested in fine art landscapes using both digital technology and historical hand printing processes. The slow and considered pace required for this work provides a nice balance to the fast paced and unpredictable nature of working with animals. I am currently working to secure gallery representation for my fine art work.

My interests are diverse and at this point in my career, I find it difficult to imagine focusing all of my creative efforts on one genre of photography. That said, I hope to spend most of my time doing editorial and commercial work while regularly reserving a portion of my time exploring my fine art interests.

What others say:

"Michael has continually presented work of such a quality as to receive not only the admiration from fellow students but also of our faculty.

His work with animals in particular is unique in vision, is both professionally sound and practical, as well as being visually interesting. His talent with technical concerns is masterful and his talent with creative concerns is equal."

- Kris Lattimore, Academy of Art University

"Michael is a student in the MFA Photography program at the Academy of Art University. He is passionate about his photography work, and is fully engaged in both the intellectual and artistic aspects of his education. He is not only concerned with the visual impact of his work, he is also conscientious about the social impact that his photographs will have. I am fully confident that he will be very successful in his future endeavors as a photographer."

- Tamara Hubbard, Academy of Art University

Rising Stars Jurors' comments:

"The body of work Michael submitted to Rising Stars as well as his website portfolio are technically very well produced and show his passion for both photography and his subjects. The expressions on the animals in his pictures show his ability to capture their beauty and grace. The infrared and horse photography on his site is also fantastic."

"Fun, curiosity, imaginative, a new look at animal's responses, technically very good. Will make a name for himself in his post-graduate photographic career."

Ian Spanier -- In his own words

"I became interested in photography at the age of 6 when my parents gave me a point and shoot camera. I was never in a position to learn anything more than basic 35mm in schools, so I strove to teach myself all formats and lighting. Initially, I disliked Photoshop as I always loved the darkroom. But, after spending as much time at the computer as in the darkroom, I became a huge fan.

Currently I am hoping to push my career forward in 2009 to shoot more advertising. I have been working with my agent, Emily Dunn of EV Creative on a short list of target clients. Along with that, I am always keeping an eye out for other potential clients.

Creatively, I am working on continuing to push some new "looks" I have created in Photoshop. My work continues to concentrate on a consistent look, something I think my clients would be comforted by. In addition, I am working on a couple of book projects, one with great help from Mary Ellen Mark's Archivist, which I am very psyched about.

I would like to win a few more awards in the coming year. I've merited a number of them this year- which I'd like to turn into medals."

- Amy Berkley, Photography Editor, Field & Stream Magazine

Rising Stars Jurors' comments:

"Ian is producing work at the pinnacle of quality, technically, and in terms of content. His imagery is very editorial in feel, but at the same time, in many cases, it is beautiful by itself regardless of whether one knows the celebrity or other person."

"Ian will be a top pro someday -- soon. Great vision and lighting skills. He is the real deal."

Emmanuel Fradin -- In his own words

"I was born in Saumur (Loire Valley), and my life has been divided between my two passions, music and photography. Upon beginning my military service in 1997, I went to Paris to join the Etablissement Cinématographique et Photographique des Armées.

The success of my photographic work during this period in the military led to my appointment as official photographer of the Prime Minister of France at the time, Lionel Jospin. For four years, I accompanied and photographed the Prime Minister on his national and international trips. I was confronted with a wide variety of situations and subjects that provided me a unique perspective on French and international politics.

In 2001, I joined the Imapress agency. Here my assignments included French political life as well as society stories. So it was with an extensive knowledge of the professional sector that I decided to become an independent photographer. I worked directly with Reuters for two years and with the Associated Press. During these years, I covered news subjects in fields as varied as politics, sports and fashion in a personal way. At the start of my freelance career, one of my first assignments took me to Chernobyl to cover the tragedy. I am now a contract photographer with several magazines and newspapers in France and abroad, and most recently covered the French Presidential election for the German magazine Stern."

- John Schults, Senior EIC, Reuters News, France

"Emmanuel is an excellent and very motivated photographer. I have worked closely with him on projects, and he is a very interesting and motivated person. He is always searching for great subjects that need to be done. I admire his curiosity and energy."

"Emmanuel's work is very strong, and shows the passion he has for getting out and making pictures of real life and politics."

"There is a quietness to his photos that creates a feeling of wanting to know more about the people and places."

Corina Marie Howell -- In her own words

"After studying art at UCSB, I began my career as the photo editor for Movieline’s Hollywood Life magazine in Los Angeles where I primarily was a producer of high-end celebrity and fashion shoots. My ultimate goal was to get published myself, so I worked my way into shooting for the magazine and eventually others.

For years I subjugated my instinctual morality to the alluring glamor of Hollywood as a magazine editor for a national lifestyle publication. Being fabulous, however, had its price. Working behind the scenes booking, producing, and shooting celebrity fashion shoots introduced me to an environment of maniacal publicists, verbal abuse, and overuse of Photoshop's "liquify" feature.

After too many long days on set with vitamin-deficient and Blackberry-obsessed women, my priorities changed, and my sense of normalcy became distorted. I eventually realized that I'd been bitchy and hungry for far too long and quit my career. I rehabbed to the Bay, went through detox, and began working out my issues through art.

My work currently takes two directions: I am still constantly in pursuit of beautiful imagery and love fashion photography. But I also pursue fine art photography that reflects my experiences within the commercial world. Much of my fine art work exemplifies the chaos that occurs when the strong moral values we're raised with butt up against the instant-gratification allure of celebrity and commercialism. My fashion images involve an exploration into shape, color, and light. In a world where the media carries so many of our messages, we can only hope to fight back using those same tools: in this light, I like to consider my perspective as a rich and vibrant love/hate relationship with beauty and glamour.

In the future I hope to pursue both a commercial career in fashion and beauty imagery as well as a fine art career in social commentary."
